The Gold Coast is a prosperous neighborhood, mostly consisting of high-rise apartment buildings and low-rise residential blocks inland to the west of Lake Michigan. As with many neighborhoods, its exact borders are subject to dispute, but generally extend east to Lake Michigan, south to Oak and west to LaSalle and north to North.

In 1885, Potter Palmer, former dry goods merchant and owner of the Palmer House hotel, built a fanciful castle on Lake Shore Drive. Over the next few decades, Chicago's elite gradually migrated from Prairie Avenue to their new home north of the Loop.

The "Gold Coast Historic District" was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 30, 1978.

In the Gold Coast, you can...

Walk along the fabulous Magnificent Mile and browse through the many stores that make shopping a fun experience!

Visit Oak Street Beach and inhale the fresh air from Lake Michigan and stop by the world-class Drake Hotel.

Shop on Oak Street and visit many of the high-end designer stores.

Take a brief walk to North Street Beach - a great beach and it is also where Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh made their first US appearance after their GOLD MEDAL win in the Olympics. Want more... it is also the focal point of the Chicago Air & Water Show each August.

From North Street Beach cross back to the city side of Lake Shore Drive and you are in Lincoln Park, home of the Lincoln Park Zoo.

Stroll down Rush Street in the evening and enjoy food, drinks, and entertainment unique to Chicago's Gold Coast.

Enjoy the charming tree-lined streets just down the street at the beautiful Washington Square.

Only one block to the Red Line means that from The Elm at Clark you have easy access to public transportation. Wrigley Field and Sox Park are only a few stops away.

Our location in Chicago's famous Gold Coast can provide you with a lifetime of activities and excitement.

There are always lots of exciting things to do in Chicago, the "city that works".
